The Murray State men’s golf team dropped two spots to seventh place on 36 holes in the 73rd Ohio Valley Conference Championship at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
The Racers never got started posting a second-round 309, six shots off their 303 in the first round on Sunday. The Racers’ score line of 303-309=612 put them in seventh place, eight strokes behind sixth-place Austin Peay (604) and 23 strokes ahead of eighth-place Eastern Illinois (634). SIUE (592), UT Martin and Tennessee Tech (594) and Belmont (596) make up the top 4. Morehead State was in fifth place with 600 points. The top four teams after Tuesday’s final round will advance to Wednesday’s game to decide the OVC’s representative at the NCAA Tournament.
Murray State’s Connor Combeswho earned All-OVC honors this week, is MSU’s top player with a ninth-place finish on scores of 74-74=148, while Kamaren Cunningham had a place in 18and place on the turns of 72-80 = 152. Walker Beck was in 23rd place on scores of 81-74=155, while Tyler Powell was in 32n/a place (76-81=157) and Trey Lewis was in 40and place (82-82=164).
Morehead State’s Joe Muschong has a 2-shot lead for the medalist title after rounds of 73-68=141 (3 under). He and Belmont’s Jack Uselton (71-72=143) (1 under) are the only players in the 43 field who are under par.
The Racers play in the first wave of tee times in Tuesday’s final round starting at 8 a.m. Murray State will be twinned with Eastern Illinois and Tennessee State.
