Mother bear settles under California house

MONROVIA, Calif. (KCAL / KCBS) – It’s not uncommon to call the exterminator about pests in your basement or crawl space, but imagine finding out those pests are bears.

Jerry Shutman discovered that a mother bear and her cub had moved into the crawl space of her home.

He first noticed the pair in his yard early Monday morning.

“I looked out the window and checked the crawl space cover, and it had been dislodged,” Shutman said.

He said the bear and her cub have been in his crawl space before but still left soon after.

Recently, Shutman noticed that the mother bear is now dragging plants and tufts of grass towards the crawl space.

“I guess she’s going to have a baby, a cub, but I’m not sure,” he said.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife said it was starting to see bears settling in crawl spaces more often.

Bears seek dens for the colder months to come, and some choose a home over a natural den.

“I’m worried. They’re making a mess. They’re tearing the insulation underneath. I know it’s happened before and I’m afraid they’ll tear the electrical wires,” Shutman said.
