Hospitality House is on track to provide additional housing solutions for seniors starting in October! The non-profit organization is currently in receivership to purchase Sierra Guest Home, a 16 unit assisted living complex in Grass Valley.

“As a community, we understand that housing is a priority and every homeless service provider strives to do their part to treat housing appropriately,” said Nancy Baglietto, CEO of Hospitality House. “We are working closely with the town of Grass Valley, Nevada County, the Continuum of Care and other nonprofit agencies to find creative housing solutions, and when Sierra Guest Home went on sale , our goal was to preserve it to ensure that no unit is lost. “

Every available housing unit in Nevada County plays a role in reducing the number of people currently homeless. In addition to the known housing gaps, most local homeless people are aging, not getting any younger. Hospitality House primarily serves the elderly (60 percent are over 50) and many do not have the capacity to pay for an apartment at increasing market rates. The waiting lists for affordable housing are long, not weeks. The Sierra Guest Home offers an immediate solution: creating a shared living environment for housing-ready residents aged 60 or over with 24/7 staff to help participants transition from homelessness to housing. in a caring and affordable place.

There are a handful of residents currently living at Sierra Guest Home, which Hospitality House intends to look after with the transfer of ownership. Current and future residents will receive three nutritious meals per day (prepared in an off-site commercial kitchen) and wrap-around case management services will be provided as needed or requested by Hospitality House staff.

The Hospitality House senior housing project will be presented in more detail at the Grass Valley Town Council meeting on August 24 at 7 p.m. The project conforms to the current use and zoning of the building. Hospitality House was able to obtain competitive financing thanks to the generosity of Banner Bank to move the project forward. Over time, Hospitality House will seek partnership opportunities with the city and county to compete for grants that could, in turn, renovate existing buildings on the property and increase the number of units to give even more people the opportunity to find affordable housing.

Creating affordable housing solutions is nothing new for Hospitality House. Between 2018 and 2021, Hospitality House was instrumental in the creation of the Brunswick Commons housing project in partnership with the County of Nevada, the City of Grass Valley and the Regional Housing Authority. Forty subsidized housing units should open next February.

Those interested in continuing the efforts of the Hospitality House Seniors Housing Project are encouraged to send donations to Hospitality House, located at 1262 Sutton Way, Grass Valley, CA 95945.
