The Central Valley and Sierra foothills have long contributed to California’s international reputation for making some of the world’s finest wines. Here are the limits of the 18 territories recognized by the federal government in the region American wine-growing areas. A wine label can use any of these official designations if at least 85% of the grapes used to make the wine were grown in the region.

Sacramento wine appellations

The Sacramento region, which has six counties, is home to portions of at least 18 federally recognized US wine areas, some of which are completely nestled in larger areas. For example, the Lodi AVA contains seven smaller AVAs. Pan and zoom the map to see the limits of the AVA, then click an area to learn more.
