GRASS VALLEY, Calif. (KTXL) – A massive fire in Grass Valley destroyed a three-bedroom house, killing a 3-year-old girl and injuring a 5-year-old boy.

Neighbor Janice Mason says she sadly witnessed the tragedy.

“I took the little one in the ambulance,” Mason said. “I could hear him cry for mom. It was very sad, very disturbing.

Fire Marshal Terry McMahan says all fires are devastating, but this one involving children has affected everyone, including first responders.

“They are facing the tragedy that has happened here,” McMahan said. “It makes you want to come home from your shift and want to hug your kids and spend time with your family. It really affects us.

The flames also damaged the apartment next door.

The fire marshal says they have not determined the cause of the fire, but do not believe foul play was involved. They will continue to piece together clues as the family picks up the pieces of their lives.

“It takes a whole community to bring things together. Being a small community, we are very united, ”said McMahan.
